The American Mathematical Monthly hailed it as "the standard treatise on elasticity," praising its significant content, originality of treatment, vigor of exposition, and valuable contributions to the theory/5(11).

Though the original print goes back as far asthe foundations of the theory of linear elasticity aren't changed so this book is still up to date. Though this book is an introduction text, as it devellops the theory from the very basics, it covers a wide range of applications that are hard to find elsewhere/5(11).

The present treatise is the outcome of a suggestion made to me some years ago by Mr R. Webb that I should assist him in the preparation of a work on Elasticity. He has unfortunately found himself unable to proceed with it, and I have therefore been obliged to take upon myself the whole of the work and the whole of the responsibility.
